Tracked prompts allow you to customize any question or query that you can monitor AI responses for, in addition to the global Ahrefs AI prompt dataset. You can choose the AI Assistant(s) / LLM(s), location, as well as how frequently to refresh the generated response.
The AI Assistants / LLMs that you can check custom prompts for are:
Google AI Overviews
Google AI Mode
ChatGPT
Perplexity
Gemini
Copilot
Grok (Note: due to changes in Grok's policy, we cannot collect any new data for the time being)
Tracked prompts can be updated monthly, weekly, or daily. You can also choose for only a selected number of AI assistants that gets checked.
💡 Tracking custom prompts are best for monitoring what AI responds for a focused list of important questions (Micro tracking). For overall brand visibility across 350M+ prompts, you can check out the Brand Radar AI platform purchase instead.
How many custom prompt checks do I get on my plan?
Every paid Ahrefs plan (except Starter) includes a monthly allowance of custom prompt tracking in Brand Radar:
Lite: 150 checks/month
Standard: 300 checks/month
Advanced: 600 checks/month
You can use these checks however you like - across different AI platforms (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot), locations, and tracking frequencies (daily, weekly, or monthly). Reducing the frequency that AI is prompted will reduce the checks consumed, and allow you to track more prompts at a time.
💡 Tip: Think of this as a built-in trial of AI visibility tracking in Ahrefs.
For most users, this allowance is enough to start tracking key prompts, understand how AI talks about your brand, and see the value before scaling up with additional checks.
What do I need to purchase to track more custom prompts?
There are 3 tiers of custom prompt tracking packages that you can purchase:
Tier | Basic | Growth | Scale |
Included checks / month | $50 for 2,500 | $100 for 7,000 | $250 for 25,000 |
Overage check / month | $0.020 | $0.015 | $0.010 |
Overage checks are what will get billed after the included checks have been spent for the month. All prices referenced here are in USD.
The full Brand Radar AI Platform purchase also comes included with 2,500 checks/mo, with an overage rate $0.020/check.
How are checks calculated?
1 check is calculated as: 1 prompt execution × 1 LLM × 1 location.
You can check the amount of checks that your current plan has, how much has been consumed in the current billing month, and purchase additional prepaid packages from your Account settings > Limits and usage:
Running out of checks
If you've run out of checks on your current plan and have Pay-as-you-go disabled, no additional custom prompts will be checked until the next billing month.
How to set up Tracked prompts
To start tracking custom prompts, you need to first set up a saved Brand Radar report.
If you don’t have a saved report yet, create one first. From there, you can click on Track custom prompts to start adding and tracking your custom queries.
You can add one custom prompt per line, which can be as long as you want. Pressing enter will create a new line where you can enter the next custom prompt for tracking. You can also set one or more locations for the check to be conducted:
The total number of estimated checks can be found just above the Add prompts button. Please remember to review the additional checks that will be consumed when proceeding to add these new prompts.
You'll be able to see all currently tracked prompts in the main Tracked prompts report page.
Generating Custom prompts

Add any custom instructions (e.g. local intent only, or omit certain words)
Select the number of prompt suggestions you wish to generate
Get Agent A's help to analyze your report and provide suggestions. Agent A can also take context of previous chat history in Agent A to help make suggestions.
When you're ready, click on Generate.
You will then be shown a screen to review the prompt suggestions that AI made. Each line is one prompt. You can edit any prompt, generate more, or regenerate the suggestions:
When you're ready to add these prompts to your saved project, click on Add prompts.
Adding and deleting custom queries for a report
On the Custom queries page, you can add more, or select existing custom prompts to be deleted. Please note that deleting custom prompts is not reversible.
How long will it take for tracked prompts to store generated answers for selected AI assistants/LLMs?
Once tracked prompts are newly added, it can take up to 24 hours for the AI response data to be visible in the Brand Radar reports. If you don't see the tracked prompts data being updated after 24 hours, please contact our support team.
How to view the responses of custom tracked prompts
Once custom tracked prompts are added to your report, you can view them alongside all other data in the AI prompt dataset from the Overview, and AI Visibility pages:
You will also see an optional "Dataset" filter in the top left to filter either for Ahrefs prompts only, or Tracked prompts. When none is selected, both data sources will be present in the report:
Tagging custom prompts
You can use tags to organize and group your custom prompts, making it easier to analyze results at scale. Tagging is especially useful when you’re tracking multiple prompts across different topics, use cases, or customer journeys.
Pulling prompt data via API
Pulling prompt data for custom queries by API are free, and does not consume any API units on your subscription plan. You can get the API endpoint using this handy button on any AI visibility report:
View the documentation for all the available endpoints.
Finding your report's ID
Every saved report has a unique ID which you'd need to specify when calling API for monitoring custom prompts.
Open your saved report in the browser and check the URL. The Report ID is the string that follows reports/ in the URL, bolded below:
