AI Visibility Metrics

Learn how to measure AI Visibility using Ahrefs Brand Radar

Written by Constance Tan

AI Visibility in Brand Radar is measured in Mentions, Citations, Impressions and AI Share of Voice

These metrics for any brand can be seen on the Brand Radar Overview and AI responses reports, and can also be pulled via API

Below is a breakdown of how each metric is calculated.

Mentions

A single mention is counted when a brand appears at least once in an AI generated response.

For example this AI response contains 3 instances of Salesforce being mentioned. However this is still only counted as 1 mention for Salesforce.

Why are mentions useful

People are getting their answers to questions using AI rather than clicking on websites that contain the answer. As a result, brand mentions become an important way for people to discover you, and understand what you do.

You can hover over each brand and click on the blue numbers to quickly filter for AI responses that mention you and/or your competitors:

Found in, and Citations

Brand Radar tracks two ways in which pages are used by AI to generate a response:

  1. Citation

  2. Found in

Found in

AI does not cite all the pages it checks. Many pages are retrieved in the background when AI is generating the response.

For example in ChatGPT, if you click on Sources:

You will see a list of pages that are:

  1. Sources (cited by AI). These also appear in-line in the body of the AI response

  2. More (Found but not cited).

Pages that are either cited or just retrieved in the background are both recorded as "Found in" an AI response:

Citation

A single citation is counted when a page appears at least once as a cited source in an AI generated response:

Found but not cited

These are pages that AI found while generating the AI response, but did not choose to cite. For example, the "more" pages when checking sources for an answer by ChatGPT:

These pages would not appear as in-line citations in the main body of the AI response.

Counting citations per domains

A single citation for a domain is counted when at least one page from that domain is cited.

For example, this AI response cites many pages from zoho.com. But this only counts as 1 citation for the domain zoho.com :

Why are Citations useful

If you've put in effort to get your brand mentioned or linked on specific PR posts, forums, or just your own website, it would be useful to see whether those pages actually get used by AI to create answers, and how they get used.

Impressions

Impressions are calculated by summing up search volumes (based on Google) of prompts where your brand appears as an AI Answer.

For calculating the number of impressions that come from single prompt which mentions your brand, we use the volume highest-volume keyword whose SERP results show that prompt as a question in People Also Ask.

In the below example, What's the full form of CRM? contributes 138k impressions to the brand Salesforce:

AI Share of voice

This is a brand's percentage share of impressions compared to other tracked brands.

When looking at multiple platforms, AI share of voice is calculated as a weighted average where platforms with more impressions have more weight:

Important: AI Share of voice is a comparative metric, and can change a lot depending on how you've set up the entities for you brand and competitor brands.
